Payaya Glass quilt
Raised on a farm for much of my life, my art is influenced by my personal idea of home, the nature I was surrounded by, and the people who raised me. Hundreds of hours of my life have been spent sitting next to my grandmother, Nonnie, crocheting together and gazing out of the window at the papaya trees. Other memories involve my abuela, Mama Tita, harvesting tropical fruits together; me, barefooted and shaking the branches for sweet treats and her, proudly standing by to collect the fruits of our labors. This piece is an ode to my grandmothers and weaves together my memories of them. Through this glass quilt, my recollections of fruit-picking with Mama Tita and the afternoon crocheting sessions with Nonnie, all set within the hazy warmth of Southwest Florida, suddenly come alive.
